About Us
Our original objectives were to promote a high standard of care and efficiency, provide an opportunity for consultation and take united action on all matters of common interest and concern. Today, although modernized for the time, our overall mission remains clear; “... to lead member homes through a united voice by advocating excellence in long term care and service delivery”.
Historically, there were originally two different groups of nursing homes that wished to form an Association, with the first meeting being held in Chatham at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home early in 1971. However, due to limited attendance, it was not possible to form the Association. A subsequent meeting was organized by the second group at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel in Fredericton. As a result of this meeting, which was organized by K. Drew of Drew Nursing Home, Sackville and W.G Heatherington of York Manor, Fredericton, the Association was formed.
The first general meeting of the Association took place on November 22, 1971 at York Manor, Fredericton. At that meeting, the By-laws of the Association were approved, and the first Executive was elected.

We work under the governance of a volunteer Board of Directors whose membership is comprised of our representatives from each of the seven provincial regions we have designated in which member homes are located. The Board of Directors employs the Executive Director of the Association. The board is responsible to set strategic direction for the association with the overall vision that New Brunswick citizens in need of long-term care and services enjoy quality of life in their communities.
In addition to our membership, we work closely with the government department of Social Development- Nursing Home Services, who is responsible for regulation of Nursing Homes. We also work closely with labour groups who represent the majority of employees in nursing homes. Specifically, we negotiate employment contacts on behalf of member homes with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the New Brunswick Union (NBU) and the New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU). Other services we provide to member homes and their employees is oversight of the management of the pension plans, health and benefits plan, which includes the Employee and Family Assistance and wellness program.
